She moves with the surety of someone who knows where she is, and where she is going. Her long hair is usually up at work, but off the clock, she tends to let it hang loose. She tends to wear minimal makeup, even at parties where ‘peacocking’ would be more acceptable. 

 

Temperament: Generally serious and quiet, Karrie usually gives the air of someone thinking intently -- at least until they actually see her deep in thought and realize she has a resting thinking face. She does have a sense of humor, and it often pops up as dry sarcasm or whip-sharp snark. She doesn’t tolerate fools well, and she can be irritable if she sees someone that way. She takes her duty seriously, even going so far as to find a suitable relationship within the Agency so she can have a partner she can talk about work with. She thinks before she speaks; after her eruption, it just means she can think as quickly as most people blurt.

 

Known Powers: Karrie openly displays her brilliance and social acumen. She has a power shield of some kind. 

 

History

Fred and Annabelle were married young and planned for kids immediately, but that wasn’t to be. They had infertility issues, and carrying Jackson to term was very hard on Annabelle’s health. Despite that, they still wanted a second child, so turned their thoughts to adoption. At the time, Fred as stationed with the Army in Santa Fe, and they found a six month old native girl in the foster system. They applied to adopt her and were granted custody. 

 

Not long after, Fred’s tour was done and they moved home to western Texas. Fred did consulting work, then ran for local office. It wasn’t hard for him to get elected; he was well-known and liked. The next time his state representative came up for election, Fred ran on the Grand Old Party ticket and won. 

From there, it was an upward trajectory. Fred was likeable and a former service member; he had a pretty wife and adorable kids. By the time they were in high school, both were attending Sidwell Friends School, a private school in Washington DC as Fred settled into his freshman term as one of Texas’s US Senators. Having already served as governor of Texas briefly, Fred seemed White House bound in a few more terms. 

 

Karrie joined the Marines after college. Though her parents urged her to do the Air Force, Karrie was set on the Marines. She wanted the challenge that they Brady Dewhurstwould present to her, and she persevered through basic. She qualified for Intelligence and thought it sounded interesting. It was more than interesting; she was good at analyzing it. 

 

After her term of service, her father aimed her at politics, but when she was approached by the State Department to work in their logistics division, she
accepted without hesitation. There, she settled in well and did a good job, gaining promotions at a regular rate. After her first year there, she met Brady Dewhurst. He also worked at State as embassy support and spent a fair amount of time in Africa,  working out of country. When he was in-country, he and Karrie started rock climbing and skydiving together. Three years after they started dating, he proposed, and she accepted. 

 

Her life seems set toward perfection just as The Storm looms on the horizon...

 

Special Knowledge: Karrie was recruited by the CIA as an analyst, not by the State Department. Likewise, Brady is a field agent, not an embassy employee.

Appearance: A lithe and willowy woman standing just a bit under average height, Kyria is most well-known for her wavy red hair and blue-grey eyes. She usually dresses in bold, dark colors and warm, plush fabrics. Any jewelry she wears is simple and gold-toned and she has never been seen wearing make-up. She often tries, usually unsuccessfully, to blend into the environment around her so she can people-watch. 

 

Temperament: While not immune to bouts of melancholy, Kyria is usually an energetic and optimistic person. She smiles easily, laughs warmly, and put those around her at ease effortlessly. 

 

Known Powers: Flight and general more-than-human everything. 

 

History: Kyria was in a coma for three years in a hospital in Hereford, England. She was brought there by two people, a man and a woman, who disappeared as soon as Kyria was put on a gurney by ER staff. She was battered and badly broken enough that she wasn't expected to live through the night. Her surgeons still believe that it must have been sheer force of will that kept her alive through the night and the months of physical recovery afterward. Despite the best effort of the Hereford police and several philanthropic organizations, to friends or family were ever discovered to claim her. She has no memories of her life before the coma, and so her past remains a mysterious blank.

Appearance: A young man of moderate height whose face shows something of a classical Irish ancestry: ruddy, heavily freckled complexion, red hair cut short and back from the forehead and rock-gray eyes. His body holds the well-toned physique of someone who has shaped it for agility rather than raw strength. Donald moves with a definite energy, though tempered with surprising flexibility.

Temperament: Donald is the sort of person you type as ESTP. He is always open to new experiences and likes to keep active, preferably in a physical capacity. However, unlike many others with his personality type, Donald is open to take direction and instructions when required. The flaw, is that he can be prone to brash or reckless behavior.

Known Powers: Shapeshifting, with some superhuman physical and mental ability.

History: Donald Wallace is the son of Deidre Kennedy and grandson of Isaac and Maeve Wallace, multimillionare financial investors all. Donald grew up largely without a father. Deidre married in 2006 to a cousin of the extended Kennedy branch, but his stepfather Christopher died two years later due to an aneurysm. Donald is still sad, but Chris didn't leave an impact. Deidre swore off romance and dedicated herself to her work and her son.

The result was that Donald was indulged very readily. In this case, the energetic child turned into an energetic teen, with an ever-shifting physical activity as the apple of his eye. One year archery, another martial arts, baseball, basketball, always Donald was quick to grasp, but with about as much lasting focus or interest. In truth, more than few talent coaches in different sports thought he could have been a great pro, but Donald was only interested in satisfying his thrills.

He didn't need a scholarship, didn't really need the career... but perhaps deep down Donald Wallace needed direction. He's about to get it.

 

Special Knowledge: Those who know the right people in the the international high society circuit might hear an interesting story about Donald's parentage. Namely Deidre announced her pregnancy three months after attending a very Roman-style (if you catch my drift) party for young, beautiful and rich twenty-somethings in Paris, the City of Love. As the list of potential fathers included several nationalities and all of wealthy, prestigious families - some of the men today are very publicly prominent - it was deemed tactful to let the matter lie. Isaac and Maeve were furious over their daughter's behavior but surprisingly then let it go.

Appearance:

Physical – 5'9”, 130Lbs, Slim Build, Light Brown Hair, Blue Eyes. Wears no makeup when on duty and very little at other times. She goes out of her way to not accentuate her femininity. Emily, when not in uniform, tends to dress conservatively for every day activities. Slacks or dress jeans, in the spring and summer she may wear Capri pants or shorts of modest length,and sensible shoes, not running shoes, a Shirt or blouse that fits the season, often with a light jacket, even when not needed. (unless it is very warm out). If wearing a dress she favors comfortable summer dresses with simple patterns. She does not like floral designs on anything. Her favorite colors for clothing are red, blue, and brown. Tends to shy away from green and yellow. Black is worn if the occasion calls for it or if the outfit really needs black to work, but never just for the sake of wearing black. Since the Incident she doesn't socialize much anymore and hasn't had a romantic date in over three years, there are occasions when she must attend a social function. On those occasions she will dress conservatively but with allowances for a more feminine look such as makeup, an evening or cocktail dress. Before the incident for night time dressing for dinner, semi formal parties, or a date would have brought out the sexy dresses of which she still has a few tucked away in the back of the closet at home. Those dresses are usually in blues or reds.

 

Attitude: Aboard ship she is confident and moves with purpose. She doesn't use bravado or arrogance when dealing with others. She will always coax rather than demand and will often let others solve a problem if doing so will make that person more capable in the future. She bristles if subject to arrogance especially if that person is not as capable as she is but will usually just hold it in. Outside of work and off the ship she is very private. She keeps to herself mostly. In social situations she is reserved and will extricate herself from them as soon as allowable. As calm and assured as she is there is an air of frustration especially in social situations. She isn't shy but she has been burned and can't risk that again.


Temperament: Generally Emily is reserved and even tempered with a good military bearing. Those who are sensitive can detect that there is a underlying well of frustration which she keeps in check. Usually slow to anger if confronted with arrogance or bigotry of any sort, her fuse become much shorter, and while it hasn't happened yet, could very well lead to an explosion. She is intolerant of any sort of sexual misbehavior toward another person or herself anything like that will send her into a rage.

 

Known Powers:  She can seemingly create water out of thin air and make it do anything she wants.

 

History: Emily belongs to a family with a long tradition of naval service, a tradition she did not follow. She has a grandfather who is a retired admiral and her father was a navy pilot who was killed in a plane crash. She has several other family members in the armed services as well. She attended the Merchant Marine Academy and instead of joining the navy she received her commission in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps where she is currently assigned to the NOASS Hi'ialakai.

Special Knowledge:  As a teenager she had a reputation as a heavy drinker and of being rather promiscuous which supposedly carried over to her attendance at the USMMA. Her application to attend the naval academy at Annapolis was rejected and her grandfather the Admiral had to call in favors and pull strings to get her into the Merchant Marine Academy. There was an incident in her second year at the USMMA which almost got her tossed from the academy, may have had something to do with sexual impropriety. It would take some digging to find out the truth. Since her graduation her and her Grandfather have not spoken.

History, Tradition, and the Sea. Those three things are what have driven the Thompson family for over two hundred years. History, tradition, and the sea. The same three things which have been a curse , as well as a blessing for Emily Thompson almost sine the day she was born.

 

The Thompson's were and are a Patriotic tribe. Since before the revolutionary war they served and since then without question every e male member, and since WWII, the women as well have all served their country in most cases in the United States Navy or Marine corp.

 

Emily was born in the mid nineteen nineties into a world of growing unrest by the time she was five years old the world had entered it's third world war even if no one wanted to admit that that is what the War on Terror was. This war would not claim as many lives as the earlier wars but the changes it wrought and still forced to this day were far reaching on a scale unprecedented. But this isn't a story about war, the war was just a back drop.

 

Emily was a bright, active child, precocious, made friends easily. She was also headstrong and stubborn. Through grade school and middle school she made decent grades often in the top ten percent of her class. She didn't excel at anything in particular though, and while her grades and performance were good she didn't stand out as a student. Part of this was due to the fact that she moved around a lot.

 

Her father was a navy pilot, not a Hollywood top gun fighter type, but rather a working pilot who flew trans ports and ASW aircraft from both land based air fields and carriers. It was grueling work but one her father saw the need for, felt pride in, and enjoyed doing. But it also meant that his immediate family had to relocate quite often, usually spending only a year or two at any one navel base, both in the States and over seas. This meant that Emily found her world uprooted often and with little regard for what she wanted or need which was stability. Yes She made friends easily, but they were temporary. She joined school clubs and activities bu the were fleeting because every year or two she had to start over. Because o f this she never invested herself in where she was, she knew even at a very young age that she wouldn't be there long. And she never once complained. After all, Thompson's never complain, they just do their duty.

 

When Emily was a small child she wasn't told fairy tales and sweet bedtime stories she was told about, had it pounded into her head and psyche, the Thompson Family history and it's legacy. According to her aunts and uncles and especially her grandfather the Admiral, the Thompson's sole purpose on earth was to defend the United States of America, and by god the only way to do that was by being Navy, or, grudgingly, a marine.

This created a subconscious resentment wit that same institution which would remain unknown to all including herself until a series of unfortunate incidents much later in life. So Emily endured even if she didn't prosper, she managed.

 

All things change though and so it was with Emily and her family. At the end of her eighth grade year her father, the pilot, was killed in a plane crash. It wasn't the result of combat, the plane wasn't shot down in some exotic local in a war zone over seas, it wasn't a dramatic carrier accident during a hurricane, it wasn't anything but an accident. It was caused by birds. While returning from a mail run to an off-shore carrier, on approach for landing a flock of birds rose from the ground into the path of her father's C-2 Greyhound seconds before the plane would have reached the runway. The resulting collisions with the flock caused the loss of control of the aircraft which crashed at the end of the runway and was engulfed in flames. All eight personnel, crew and passengers, were killed.

 

Emily was devastated. As much as they were apart she was still very much her fathers daughter, in fact it had been her intention to follow her father into a career in naval aviation, so much so that she had taken a few lessons the previous summer as well as several private training flights with her father when he was home and they could rent a training aircraft for a few hours of flying. This tragedy ended that dream. But Emily was strong. Her mother needed her and so did her two little brothers. The following months were difficult. They had lived on various naval basses for her entire life and for several years before she had been born. Her mom and dad had been talking about retirement and where they would settle but there had been no concrete plans, and so with this sudden tragedy, they had no where to go.

 

But family always comes first, after country in the Thompson clan. The Admiral, now retired himself opened his home in Annapolis Maryland to his daughter in law and grandchildren. And so Emily found herself in a completely new world for once a world that would be stable. Unfortunately, she didn't fit very well.

 

Annapolis was, for Emily, surreal. It was a navy city, the Academy was a few miles away and even at fourteen she was pretty sure she would end up there for her education. After all that's what legacies were for right? But she was fourteen and she was also suffering and while she didn't act out like some children did she was put in a situation that with her personalty led to some not so wise choices.

 

To begin The Admiral was now the father figure for her brothers and her. He wasn't grandpa or even grandfather, he was The Admiral and The Admiral was far far stricter than her own father and even more so with her than with the boys. He had had only sons and had only a vague notion of the rearing of a girl thus he restricted her more. Emily chaffed under these restrictions. And when not at home she tended to rebel socially. Never to the extremes and she never did get into any trouble, she didn't do drugs, ever, but drinking yes, and sex ,very much yes. She found that she enjoyed both, but sex she really liked, and with her history of not making permanent connections she found the idea of casual sex just fine as long as she was careful, and she was, what could possibly be the problem.

 

Emily's high school years were unremarkable while her grades stayed the same because of the larger pool of students her academic standing fell downward into the top twenty-five percent. She now took interest in non academic pursuits at school as well. Enjoyed singing and had a decent voice for choir, she also learned to play the drums for marching band and even started learning how to play the trap set, the standard drum set used in modern music such as rock and country. For sports she played volley ball and basket ball fairly well but would never be professional at it.. Outside of school she did the type of volunteering expected of her at hospitals and shelters but it was more duty than desire. For free time and recreation, she had made several friends who were fun to hang around with, friends her the Admiral wouldn't approve of. Nor would he approve of her dating habits. She dated a lot but never had a boyfriend and she did get a bit of a reputation for being easy. One she would not deny.

 

The four years of high school went by fast, mid way through her senior year her mother remarried, another navy man but not a pilot. He was the same age Emily's father would have been, divorced and entering the end of his career. Her mom and her new step dad got along real well. In a twist, she and her brothers continued to live with their grandparents to finish school, which suited everyone really fine.

 

Emily had applied for admittance to the naval academy but didn't get accepted this was almost as devastating as her fathers death. The Admiral called in a few favors and pulled some strings and because of the legacy of her grandfather and the sacrifice of her father than for any of her own merits, Emily found herself accepted into The United States Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, New York, with the understanding that when she graduated she would enter the Navy.

 

Emily hated the academy. She hated the enforced discipline the petty shit freshmen had to go through and the way women were treated as inferior. She hated the casual acceptance of bigotry and homophobia, anyone different was subjected to. She hated the blind eye the faculty and the service turned. But she toed the line. After all she was a Thompson, she did her duty.

 

Over the summer following her first year Emily cut loose to burn off steam, she drank a lot and had lots of sex with lots of different guys while on vacation in Florida where she was visiting her mom and step dad for a month. When she returned home to Maryland she barely stopped the acting out. The admiral noticed but didn't voice his disapproval.

 

Her second year of the Academy was better at first discipline relaxed somewhat because she was no longer a freshman. Her grades actually improved and she began to think about what she was going to do for the future. Then the incident occurred. The details don't matter, not anymore. She reported it and the perpetrator, but there were no witnesses, evidence was in conclusive, and well she had a reputation. So it was dismissed and she was actually given a verbal reprimand and warning about her behavior, she was told that if she didn't straighten up she would be out. Reputation. Such a simple thing that even in the modern age could carry so much weight. Even when it shouldn't have any bearing at all.

 

At home she got some support mainly from her brothers but everyone else it was suck it up, do your duty, these things happen. Soldier on sailor. At school it was worse. The incident and the aftermath had changed her suddenly she was that young girl from before her dad had died again, she wasn't going to make friends or get too close to anyone, it was all temporary all business. She dove into her studies her grades got better. She didn't socialize beyond what was required. She stopped drinking and other extra curricular activities she had been so fond of. She put it behind her and soldier on like the Admiral had told her to do. She didn't go home for holidays or even the short summer leaves, instead staying in barracks or in the case of mandatory leave, at he local YMCWA. During those breaks she also worked a few part time jobs to bring in a little cash.

 

While she hated the academy she loved the ship board training . Being at sea was so much different than the small boat sailing she had done up to that point. Yes the work was hard and challenging but being at sea was the most alive she had ever felt she could forget that things that troubled her. Out there on a ship everything was centered.

 

When graduation approached she made a monumental decision. It went against everything she had been raised to be and do, and it broke the unspoken promise she had given her grandfather and drove a wedge between them which remains to this day. She declined to take a commission in the Navy instead entering service with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps.

A few months later Ensign Emily Thompson, NOAA, stood her first duty watch on board her first assignment, the NOAAS Hi'ialakai as she made her way out of port at Pearl Harbor, heading into the Pacific.

Appearance: Rendered into one of the more visually striking people on the planet even among Stormers by her transformation, Cassandra Durant's athletic 5'8 frame and bright smile betrays her vivid intensity. The bombshell brunette is savoy enough to dress up to social expectations, but if she's setting up explosives down range it's jeans, t-shirts, and appropriate PPE. Safety is the ultimate accessory! 

 

Temperament: Exuberant, hardworking, and just a little too much of a reflexive rebel for her own good, Cassandra Durant will try anything once, particularly if pyrotechnics are involved. She leans heavily into the 'why not?' line of reasoning, relying on friends and family to get her out of the situations she gets herself in in more or less one piece. Losing her eyebrows to test an idea? Worth it.

 

Known Powers: Blowing things up and being superhumanly personable about it. 

 

History: 20 years old, Cassandra learned her love of explosions and other tomboyish habits from three older brothers growing up in central California, setting off fireworks amid the glow of a family that loved her as the baby of the family. Precocious from the start, she wondered 'why?' and 'how can we make it better?', turning restless energy into academic performance. To her parent's growing collection of gray hairs, her main way of expressing discontent and boredom was a parade of pranks that got her sent to Principal's office time and again.

 

When asked by her high school councilor what she wanted to do for a living, she answered after a pause and a shrug, “...Blow things up?”

Given the sparsity of entry-level fireworks jobs in the area and not wanting to follow her three brothers into one of the branches of the military, Cassandra elected for the college route, majoring in engineering at Cuesta College. A year and half of mostly-prereq classes and minimum wage jobs into that life plan, the Storm happened. She didn't change during those first months, but she did after, blooming in the midst of forcing herself to work on yet another boring essay, blinking as the change left her with the realization she had her own fireworks now.

 

Her laugh woke up her roommate Janet, filling the other girl with a dread only slightly abated by the fact Cassandra had left in the night with only a brief 'Off to Houston for a job' note in explanation. 

 

Special Knowledge: Probably would have ended up in juvie if not for the local fireworks operator taking her under his wing as her brothers trickled off into the armed forces and out of her home town.

Appearance: [ 17 yrs old, 5’2”, 115 lbs, Brown Hair, Hazel Eyes, Freckles]  Since the Burning (she never calls that time the Storm) Temple has let her self-go for the most part. She will wear the same set of clothes until they stink, bathe’s only when she feels like it and is basically not pleasant to be around. She is moody and can be paranoid. All in all and unattractive person who everyone would avoid if the could, or more accurately if she would let them. She uses her powers to get what she wants, to make people see her how she wants and has little moral qualm about it currently.


Temperament: Temple suffers a form of PTSD, which is not uncommon anymore since the storm but it is exacerbated by her psychic abilities. She is withdrawn and suspicious verging on paranoid. She is very slow to trust and has boundary issues. She will avoid conflict if at all possible, but if pushed will lash out with little or no restraint. Everyone she knew before the storm is dead. She fears making new friends because she doesn’t want that trauma to repeat but deep down, she desperately wants and needs a friend. She is also haunted by her memories which since the development of her telepathic abilities combined with her eidetic memory have begun manifesting themselves, in her head, as ghosts of those she has mind-scanned. She is literally hearing voices in her head when stressed.


Known Powers: None

History: Temple is a survivor/refugee of the burning of the Gulf Coast. She is a high school aged girl. All her official records were destroyed except for those which are recorded in the state Capitol or Federal. If any of her relatives are still alive, they too have been displaced and are refugees. She has made no attempts to locate any she simply believes that they are all dead.

Special Knowledge: Even before the storm Temple had an Eidetic Memory there could be records of this floating around. Her survival of the burn is a mystery, the PTB were very interested in finding out how she survived since at the time of her rescue she gave no indication of being empowered.

 

Backstory

 

Oil.

 

Arguably the life blood of the United States of America. Fueling industry and economy not just for that great nation but for the world at large as well.

Until The storm, when the blood flowed and burned.

 

On the day of The Storm, in the refineries and tank farms stretching along the gulf coast from Baytown Texas to some 120 mile east, at Lake Charles Louisiana, approximately  four hundred million barrels of oil sat in tanks or underground, not counting the millions of gallons of already refined product.

 

The world spun, contracted and expanded. There was heat and cold, the surface of the sun, the absolute coldness of interstellar space, nothing and everything. All at once.

 

An empty burned ruin, a bedroom full of childhood memories and teenage dreams...

 

The sound shattered the stillness of the night, not because it was loud but because all else was silent, desolate. It was a sound that suggested the cracking of ice under pressure, as soon as it happened, though, it began fading into the silence of the night.

 

The girl appeared out of thin air , where, a moment before, nothing had been, the tears already leaking from her tightly closed eyes, she didn’t need to see, she knew where she was. With a sob she took a breath, a breath she didn’t know she had been holding, the air tasted bad.  All she could smell was the burning oil.

 

It began with a spark at the Big Hill Reserve, the Storm was already raging across the globe and the powers that be were scrambling. No one there at the facility survived to tell us what happened but later, refugees who had been close described hell on earth. A ball of fire rising thousands of feet into the air some said it looked like an atom bomb, some said it was like a huge wave, some said it looked like a man or a dragon. Strangely no one had taken a picture.

 

While it may have looked like an explosion,  it wasn’t one, there had been no blast just the flame. It fell back to earth and in the world before the Storm that would have been that, but this wasn’t that world anymore. It came back to the ground and like a wave of burning living oil it moved. The fire raced east and west toward more place where the oil was stored it moved fast its speed like that of a wildfire burning everything it touched. The places where the oil was still in tanks suddenly burst into flame and the burning mass streaked toward the large mass, like children running to their mother. It was a catastrophe, apocalyptic.

 

I opened my eyes the tears had stopped, I was back in my room, not that there was much left but the charred remains of the fallen in brick walls and a few stud posts, debris littered the charred, bare and cracked concrete foundation . I looked where my bed should have been all that was left was the semi melted and twisted springs the mattress used to rest on. I miss that bed.

 

They had found me here in this room, sitting on the floor in a state of shock, covered with soot but otherwise unhurt. They found the rest of my family, burned, dead, throughout the house, and my friends and their families in the houses around the neighborhood. All dead. All burned in the flash fire which had ravaged the coast. But I had survived.

 

My name was Temple Louise Faire, but I'm not really her anymore, she died with the rest of my family. So, I'm just Temple now.

 

Back then when I was her I was a normal kid, nothing special, I wore braces, I liked boys, I was skinny and good at sports, I played softball, ran track. I liked music was a big fan of Pink, I had her Cds, I guess I kind of had a crush on her. I enjoyed dancing even though I wasn't very good at it, but I liked going to the school dances. I wasn't very smart really, but everyone thought I was. I could remember things easily especially if I read it or saw it and if I tried really, really hard, I could recall it word for word. They call that a photographic memory. There was a kid, Tanner Burk, in my class he was a nerd, but he was nice I went out with him in 8th grade he was the first boy I let feel me up. He told me it wasn't really a photographic memory that it was called an eidetic memory, not that it mattered, I looked it up once, they are both the same thing. I don't know what happened to Tanner, He's probably dead most everyone I knew back then is.

 

My parents were just parents, mom and dad, I can’t remember their names now, okay, well, I could, but really, what’s the point, they were her parents and I'm not her anymore. I had a sister she was 11 months younger than me and a brother he was five years behind me. They had names too. Doesn't matter now.

 

Understand, I'm not feeling sorry for myself. This isn't a cry out for help, it just doesn't matter, not now.

Anyway, the braces came off when I was sixteen and I got my first and last job that year. I went to work at the Dairy Queen, started on the fry machine, then after a couple of weeks moved up to burgers. I liked working there it was fun I liked the assistant manager. He had gone to my school, graduated that summer and I think he liked me. I had fantasies about him, I think he might have asked me out even though I was a minor. I would have gone too.

 

But that never happened, instead we got the Storm.

 

I was at work that day, it was after school. The evening rush hadn’t started yet but there were a couple of guys, oilfield workers most likely, both of them order the steak finger basket that was on sale that week. Rob, the boy I liked, was working as was Debbie Holland. She and I were the same age but not really friends. She had only started working that week and it was the first time I worked with her, I was kind of annoyed Rob was paying a lot of attention to her . She had bigger tits than me, but she was chubby…oh, sorry, I mean curvy.  I guess I was jealous. I was watching the two of them flirt when one of the oilfield workers let out bad curse dropping the F bomb. As this was the dairy queen that was just not allowed everyone turned and looked at the man but what we saw wasn't him it was the wall of fire racing down the avenue wight toward the DQ. The last thing I remember about that was the plate glass windows blowing inward from the heat.

 

As fast as the wave of flame began and spread, it was gone. It didn’t just burn out, eyewitnesses said that the whole thing seemed to gather and congeal, that was a word that many used and seeped into the ground disappearing. But the disaster wasn’t over. That unearthly thing of flames was gone but fires still raged all up and down the coast  as refineries burned and cities and towns were threatened.

 

Sacrifices were made. The human population of the Houston metropolitan area was in imminent danger, so the bulk of the resources were thrown in that direction saving the city from fire at the expense of dozens of small towns and cities. Thousands perished in those abandoned places and tens of thousands became refugees.

 

They found me here, in my room, I was in what the doctors called catatonic shock, they couldn’t explain how I survived the fire. I could tell them now if I had wanted too.

 

I didn’t.

 

They flew me to a refugee camp on helicopter there were a couple of other survivors, but they were sedated, burned, scarred for life. I am too you just can’t see my scars.

 

By then the empowered were being noticed, the people the storm had changed, the ones we took to calling the Stormers, most everyone had their attention on those wonder people. They were amazing people with superpowers like a marvel movie, their existence changed the world. Us refugees were a problem, sure there were charities and the government but there was only so much money and caring to go around. We started to fall by the wayside to become a burden. Some of us fell through the cracks, some of us jumped.

 

I was messed up after I wouldn’t talk. They realized that whatever had burned Texas was still there under ground still burning and worse it moved. One day it would be near Houston the next all the way over in Louisiana. It never traveled further north than the interstate and never under the gulf. Occasionally it would seep out of the ground and fires would spring up it was hell. I heard this and was frightened. That was my home, and in my mind that thing was looking for me. I know it’s an irrational fear but it’s my fear, nonetheless.

 

They tested us for powers, they didn’t find any on me. I made sure of that. I’m not sure when I started hearing them when they didn’t talk when I found I could sneak into their minds, learn their secrets. It was some time after the storm days weeks. But eventually my changes came to the surface. I could read their minds, I could make them do things think what i wanted them to think, I could do lots of things I couldn’t do before. I wasn’t going to let them experiment on me and that’s what they wanted to do wanted to find weak empowered not the ones like the read headed girl or the English guy who could eff up the weather. They wanted ones they could control. That’s why I hid my power.

 

Then today a new man came he wasn’t a doctor but an empowered I didn’t think I could hide my ability from him. This freaked me out and I had a panic attack and then I wasn’t there anymore I was here in my old burned out home. I just discovered a new power one that was going to make a big difference in my life.

Regardless if she is just wearing jeans and shirt or the most spectacular of little black dresses, Lilith always wears clothing of the highest quality that straddles the line between elegant and provocative, her jewelry expensive but not ostentatious. Though it can hardly embellish such ineffable beauty, her make-up is always expertly applied, usually light and tasteful such that it is barely noticeable, though she glams it up as the occasion calls for it. Her lips are naturally a deep crimson, but she frequently changes the colour of her tapering nails.

Temperament: Playfully sensuous, unabashedly sexual and hedonistic, somewhat vain and can be petty when denied or irritated, but generally believes the world would be a better place if people got laid more. A bit of a tease, she enjoys tweaking those who take themselves too seriously. History: Born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1980 to a Czech/Slovak Father and French Mother, Eva Zelenka and her parents and siblings (2 sisters, 2 brothers) immigrated to New York City a few years before the Velvet Revolution, expecting an outbreak of violence, which didn't occur, or at least to the level they feared. Eva showed an early talent and drive to be a professional ballerina, while her brothers worked with their parents running the Eastern European Grocery they own, and her sisters pursued academic careers as a dentist and lawyer, respectively.

Eva's career ended before it even started when she fell head over heels for a man a decade her senior, Eric Powers, when she was eighteen and ended up pregnant. Eric was an up and coming Wall Street Executive, and promised to make an honest and pampered woman of her. At first, Eva was delighted, she had a handsome and wealthy husband, and a daughter, and then a son two years later. But soon, it was clear, all Eric wanted was a trophy to show off to his friends, a trophy he cajoled into not pursuing a career of her own under the guise of caring for their children. A trophy that seemed to grow more tarnished with every year.

Though she tried to be a good mother, parenting didn't come easily to her, not helped in the least when she tried to enforce limits while Eric spoiled them rotten. Eric began working later and travelling more, and Eva suspected, then knew, he was cheating on her. To relieve the boredom and anxiety, as well as get her own bit of revenge, starting with some light drug use, then moving on to carnal pleasures. First with the pool boy, then the nanny, then others. After five years of this, finally confronting her after she had slept with one of his business partners, Eric and she had a colossal fight. He demanded a divorce. While she might have suspected, even known about Eric's infidelity, he had proof of hers along with her drug use, and with the pre-nup, she got nothing, nor custody of her children, who had sided with their father. Almost before he was out the door, Eric's mistress, an intern almost ten years younger than Eva, moved into the house.

Embarrassed and practically a pariah in the social circle she had once been part of, Eva had to flee, and she fled to the other side of country, to California, to start her life anew at 29. Having little in the way of real world skills, Eva fell back on what she new. She hadn't kept up as a ballerina, but if she'd put on some years and some pounds, she was still prettier than average and could dance. She tried being an actress, but other than one commercial, never got a real part. Being prettier than average didn't mean a thing in LA. She couldn't tolerate the people as a barista.

Soon, she fell back on her skills as a dancer and became a stripper. She might have been a bit older than most of them, less curvaceous than many, but she had actual skill and training as a dancer, and she ended up making a living at it. And where she couldn't stand the caffeine-addicted patrons as a barista, she rather enjoyed her clients as a stripper - some of them at least.  It wasn't exactly what she wanted, but it sufficed. She even got in somewhat better shape, working out some to keep up with her younger co-workers, and the requisite breast implants, though relatively modest ones.

While she had no objection taking gifts and money from her clients, Eva had no intention of ever belonging to a single man again, even if the man was an Emirati prince. But with the years passing, age starting to weigh her down, and getting fewer clients, and fewer regulars staying, Eva is beginning to wonder what she can would do next.

Special Knowledge: Early in her time in California, Eva Zelenka - as Eva Languorous - did several pornographic movies. They were billed as being erotica to her, but they ended up being anything but, and didn't even pay all that well. After a few years of stripping, Eva worked as a discreet escort, first for some of her stripping clients, then branching out from there, as her own boss. She was raped by a client who wouldn't take no for an answer. Afterwards, spent much time at the firing range, and never goes unarmed if she can manage it. Has been involved in two shootings, where men have died, but hasn't been charged or convicted - they were deemed self-defence.

Appearance: Ryan's a normally confident man, haunted by lost dreams.  Twenty years in the Air force has left him fit and with a solid bearing and cool demeanor.  Standing at 6'3, he's fairly tall, with a well toned build that belies an innate grace.

 

Temperament: Calm and reserved, the traces of his competitive nature is still there, though few things can rouse it.  At home in his solitude, it's only been in the last couple of years that he's come out of his shell and met others, regaining some of the sense of life that his boss remembered from the Academy days.

History: Ryan was born in Seattle, Washington, and joined the Air Force as soon as he could.  Serving twenty years in both combat and non-combat roles, he would eventually attain the rank of Major befire retiring.   A civilian for the first time  in his adult life, he now works at a transportation company, Aerostar Transport, as both a driver and pilot.

 

Special Knowledge: Dreamed of being an Astronaut from an early age, the failure to achieve this has haunted him, and is the specter of failure that sometimes wakes him up at night.

Ryan Hawke always dreamed of space.   He always wanted to be an astronaut, and coming from a non-military family, he knew he'd have to break certain traditions.  Unlike many kids he knew, he enjoyed the thrills of life, and always sought to broaden his horizons.
His parents were mostly pacifists, highly liberal, and utterly abhorred their only son's choice to join the Air Force out of high school.   He knew he wasn't some genius who'd change the world, but he still had his dream, and worked hard to pursue it.  

 

Quickly it was seen that he had a nearly innate knack for piloting, and quickly rose in the ranks.  His first mission was in support of operations in Iraq, flying an A-10 Thunderbolt II.   not the fastest machine by any stretch, it gave him real experience, and was the first time he'd killed in battle.   After his first tour, he was given the opportunity to move to a more advanced multi-role fighter, first the F-15C Strike Eagle, and to officer's school.   

By the end of his 5 tours  the last as an instructor at the Air Force Academy, he'd finally had enough, having become something of an old man as a Major.  He saw the writing on the wall, that his chances of ever actually becoming an astronaut were nil, and he just grew tired of it.  Knowing his bitterness would eventually come to affect his work, and feeling he couldn't jeopardize others, he resigned and received an honorable discharge from the Airforce.

 

Having no family to speak of, no wife and kids, and no place to stay, He set out with the well-maintained motorcycle he'd bought when getting assigned as an instructor.  He head for Seattle, knowing several former buddies were there, and having gotten a job interview with Boeing, being a test pilot.

 

The Interview fell through though, they thought his experience was great, but that he was just getting abit too old for the newer higher speed and g-force designs.

 

Feeling about as low as possible, Ryan was nearly done with the bottle of whiskey when someone from his past changed his life.  Major James Jamison had been an instructor at the Air Force Academy over twenty years ago, and prided himself on never forgetting a face.  When he saw the much older now prodigy he'd personally trained, drinking whiskey straight with reckless abandon, he made his way over.  

"Rah-rah, maybe you oughta lay off."   The younger man looked up and over, and even nearly dead drunk, his near perfect memory was just that.  "JJ?  that you?"

 

"Yeah buddy it's me.  What's got you finding solace in the bottle?"

 

"Life's a total shitshow.  Too old to go to space, too old to be a test pilot, Too old to do much of anything it seems."  JJ was one of the few he'd told of his real hope to go to space openly.

 

Even drunk he was still somewhat erudite, and James Jamison marveled.  "Look buddy, Why don't you come home with me tonight.  In the morning, i got something I'll run by ya, and maybe things won't seem so shitty."

 

Defeated, Deflated, and with nothing better, Ryan just nodded.  The two were able to heft the bike into his truck bed, and head for Jamison's home. 

 

When morning came, the elder major revealed he now had a fairly booming transportation company, moving goods and such up and down the coast, and around the Sea-Tac area.  A job offer followed, and while it wasn't flying the cutting edge, it let him fly again, and Ryan took it.  There had to be life after the Air Force.

 

It let him fly and make a living so Ryan quietly settled in, still bitter over the death of his dream, but thankful to James for giving him something more than a bike and a bottle to look forward to.  Now a homeowner, he's working at actually living life now instead of his singular focus on the Air Force and his old dream.

Appearance: Renata is of middling size and athletic build. She cuts her dark hair short, and rarely bothers with affectations like jewelry or makeup, though her ears are pierced. She has her father's almost-green hazel eyes, and by quirk of imitation or genetics also has his intense, unblinking stare. She tends to dress in muted colors, preferring green and blue, or black. Jeans, sneakers and t-shirts are her preferred garb, along with a hoodie or her beloved leather jacket for when it's cold out. She carries herself with a bit of a slouch and tends to look at the ground without thinking about it; the gait of someone hoping to avoid attention.

Temperament: She's a pressure cooker. Renata tends to take things quietly up until she reaches her limit, and then explode into action. Sometimes that's a good thing, when action is needed. It can also complicate things quite a bit, as it can lead to her overreacting in the moment. She's social at heart, but has enough trust issues that she stays quiet around strangers. Renata does best when there's a trusted intermediary like a mutual friend, who can melt the initial barriers.

Known Powers:
- Psychokinesis: Renata can exert considerable force over distance with no apparent action/reaction or source of energy. This force can be concentrated within her body as well, either to magnify her physical strength or create protective barriers.
- Biokinesis: Her control over matter and forces extends to her body in more detail than it seems to in other substances, allowing her a great deal of influence over her own functioning. History:
Renata is the daughter of current Republican Senator of Pennsylvania, Thomas Hodges and his wife Isabella. From a young age she enjoyed a close relationship with her family, often tagging along with her older brothers to play. She was also known for regularly sticking up for her younger brother once he was born, loyally protecting him from anyone who might try to pick on him. In high school she was known for her athletic performance, in both track and soccer especially, as well as for her strong, independent spirit that led her to push boundaries. She transferred to the very prestigious Dalton Academy in her senior year and graduated with high marks.

Since graduation Renata enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she's been continuing her studies and contributing her considerable athletic talents to several school teams.


Special Knowledge:
Renata didn't just transfer out of her original high school; she was essentially forced to leave to avoid expulsion. Her sophomore and junior years were fraught with disciplinary warnings and poor grades. Things seemed to level off at Dalton, though they don't release anything but grade transcripts, so it's hard to say in detail what happened there.

Appearance: A skinny, geeky-looking redhead who is usually seen with fugly glasses, clothes chosen more for convenience and utility than looks, and a big goofy smile, Dorothy, who goes by 'DZ' or 'Deezy' most of the time, isn't innately bad looking but needs to invest some effort to let that shine through. What she lacks in physical development she makes up for in enthusiasm though!

 

Temperament: Deezy has a big personality, full of zest for life and often overeager friendliness. Though she frequently misses social cues, she doesn't experience social anxiety, and is quick with apologies and forgiveness in turn. She can be exhausting though, with her dial stuck on '11.' Never walking when she can run, rarely just speaking when she can shout.

 

Known Powers:

  • Superhuman intelligence; data-processing volume and speed and retention

History

Deezy lives out in Wooster, Ohio with her mom and dad, or did until very recently. Her father runs the Handy Man auto mechanic and general repair shop out on the edge of town where it gives way to a series of soybean and corn farms. Her mother works at the Agricultural Technical Institute branch in Wooster as a horticulturalist. An only child, she was most often either at school, with friends, or hanging out at her dad's shop, which was just right around the corner from their little house. She credits that with starting up her interest in cars and mechanics.

 

...and what an interest it was. Once focused, Deezy's capacity to learn and remember intricate details about engines, makes, models and so on seemed virtually unlimited. At first amused, and then fascinated, her father John made a game of teaching her and then upped the ante again and again, looking for the point that she got mad and wanted to quit. In the end he gave up before she ever did.She went on to read books, devour web pages, and on the internet she learned about more than just cars and auto mechanics...there was a whole WORLD of machines out there! As the end of high school loomed large, Deezy decided to apply not just to Wooster College, but also a Hail Mary app sent to MIT itself. As part of the application she included a set of design specs for an improved internal combustion engine that she'd been messing around with ideas for along with her dad.

 

She was contacted by one of the professors at MIT a couple of weeks later, Ben Delford...not to discuss the application, but to ask about and discuss the design, which Admissions had asked for his input and evaluation of. Her acceptance letter followed only days later.

 

Unfortunately, things didn't go to plan. Her mother was badly injured in an accident, and not only couldn't work anymore but had to have several expensive surgeries to save. Without her income, and those bills, things were looking very shaky. Despite her father's misgivings, Deezy decided to take her uncle up on an offer to head to Cleveland and work at his auto shop up there until the bills were paid off and things had settled down some. Her uncle, Kevin, had said he had a need of good, reliable hands and that mechanics in the city earned a lot of money. John might not feel good about accepting handouts, even from kin, but he couldn't say no to his daughter getting some solid work experience...and the hope was that she wouldn't be delaying her opportunity at MIT by too long. Besides, rumors of some shady business aside, family was family, and they really needed the money.

 

So with teary farewells Deezy left home for at least a little while to make her fortune in the city...never suspecting the madness that lay in wait.

 

Special Knowledge:
At the time of her eruption, Deezy was working for her uncle at his auto mechanic shop Kevin's Automotive & Towing in Cleveland. The place has a bit of a shady reputation, though nothing overtly criminal has been found to take place there.
