Ayato Nishima dreamed of space.  As a youth, he studied extensively, knowing he'd need a good background in mathematics, computers, and navigation to gain a place on a spaceship.   It was a dream he achieved when he signed on as a spacecraft pilot for one of the deep-space mining conglomerates.

His first tour of many taught him so much, and he would continue on for several years without incident.   Perhaps the two most glaring things that stood out about his chosen profession were that while it could be quite boring, this wasn't a bad thing, as space was a harsh and cruel place, where a single mistake could get him, his fellow crew killed, and he'd seen at least two cases where ships were destroyed.   The second thing was the quality of the food.  It was bad.   Little better than MRE's, the food they were provided was completely terrible.  Nutritious perhaps, but tough to stomach at best.  He resolved that this would change, at least for whatever ship he was on.  It took him some time, but he did learn to cook, and everything was ready.   As he brought little with him aside spare clothing and a dataslate filled with various books, he had plenty of allotted weight left.  To that end he began to bring foodstuffs that were of far higher quality, along with the basic means to cook them.

Soon it was found that the ships he served on had better morale, as well as made more timely runs due to increased crew performance, all because the quality of food he provided was better.   This wasn't enough to get the company to change the provided meals, but after a run or two, most of the crew would give up some of their own allotted weight for more ingredients.   Ayato now had what he had always dreamed of, a life in space, good food, and friends to enjoy both with.

Karen McKenna

A Strong Crew Chief Who Wears Power Armor

“So. Did something break or do you need something broken, Sir?”

Only Child. School Athlete. Marine.

A 37-year old American veteran of the Yemeni Khat War as a member the 96th Armored Division, Karen came out of the service with a passion for physical self-mastery, love of new places, and knack for knowing when and how to kick a machine just so. The last skill set earned the 5'8 blonde a berth on the Polaris as a maintenance person and de-facto head of security aboard. She loves the easy familiarity of a pseudo military command structure and the family that comes with it, much as she's glad to not be on the front lines of the latest ground war earthside like she was when active duty.

No, she'll take her shots hand-to-hand on the mat given the choice, thank you very much. All good-natured comers welcome. She's similarly blunt about what she does and doesn't like, something that's cost her a series of girlfriends over the years despite her usually positive attitude. Oh, well.

A fairly routine rescue mission ended up with her being quite literally, conspiracy theories aside, the first member of the United States Marine Corps to have combat experience against an alien threat as well as the bonded operator of humanity's sole alien super suit. Could have ended worse, much as she's conflicted about being called to active service again. At least she's kept a certain cute medical technician and fellow veteran of the voyage in her life afterwards...

Personal Information
Name: Yseult Langlois
Series: Spacehounds
Home Region: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Occupation: Gravity Drive/Sub-Space Compression Drive Specialist

Physical Traits
Ethnicity: Caucasian (French)
Gender: Female
Age: 43
Apparent Age: Late Twenties/Early Thirties
Height: 5’7’’
Weight: 128 lbs
Eyes: Dark, nearly black
Hair: Raven Black, short
Handedness: Left

Appearance
Yseult is a very  attractive woman in her late thirties who can pass for a decade younger. She is of pure French-Canadian stock, pale skinned, and svelte, with nice curves. She keeps her raven hair stylishly short and her black eyes can be intense or warm by turns. She prefers wearing professional clothing with clear, elegant lines and muted colours, as well as heels for the elegance, when practical. Her movements are brisk and precise. She speaks with a fetching French accent.

When interacting in a professional capacity or around strangers, she acts in a cool, detached, slightly aloof manner. When she is with friends and family, however, she is much more relaxed and open.

When thinking deeply or pondering multiple hypotheses, she tends to tap her lips with a finger and her eyes flick rapidly from side to side. When scared or very uncomfortable, she often spins her wedding band on her finger with her thumb

Background
Yseult, born and raised in Montreal, was always a bright child prodigy with a voracious in the sciences and engineering, wanting to know how things worked and how to make them better. She graduated high school at 15, earned her B. Eng in Aerospace Engineering from McGill at 18, her Masters in Applied Gravitonics from Waterloo at 19, and a PHD in Gravity Drive Design from MIT by 22.

Yseult was immediately hired by Coriolis Systems for their R&D department. Yseult was thrilled, research and development was exactly what she wanted to do, and she set to it with will and eagerness.

Despite a condescending supervisor - Jakob Schwartz - who was more interested in getting in her pants than in her ideas, Yseult made a steady progress at Coriolis Systems, though she could never seem to get above or around Schwartz. She knew she was the better engineer and theorist, but Schwartz was a people person, able to manage effectively, and more importantly, knew how to schmooze and bullshit.

Meeting her husband to be, François Dionne, an architect - who she met in a coffee shop when she was 25 - curtailed her frustration and annoyance in a job she loved due to a prick boss. Over a single conversation, he took the reserved engineer and scientist and made her laugh, made her value herself as a complete person rather than a piece of eye-candy or a cog in an industrial wheel. A year later, they were married, and a year after that, they welcomed their daughter Monique into the world. Two years later, they added a son, Loric, to the family.

Despite raising two children, and making as much time for them as she could, Yseult was still enthusiastic about work, determined to make a breakthrough that would get her out from under Schwartz.

And she did make a breakthrough, an advancement in the Gravimetric transducer. The GMT allows for the transformation of a portion of the collected gravity field into usable electrical energy which in turn allows for a greater power efficiency overall and a reduction in fuel consumption for the fusion reactor. Within the last year, this technological breakthrough has allowed Coriolis Systems to make great leaps in all aspects of GID driven craft.

And Jakob Schwartz stole all the credit, earning him a massive bonus and huge promotion. When Yseult tried to protest and prove it was her discovery, with his new reputation and considerably better people skills, Schwartz got Yseult blacklisted from any position in research & development.

Yseult was devastated. She had two children to support, as well as a niche set of skills she was being prevented from utilizing in the manner she wished. But spacecraft were always in need of a GID Specialist. While she designed Gravity Drives, she had never had the intention of actually having a career in space.

But it was what was available to her that at least used her education and experience and paid a decent wage. And it wasn’t teaching.

And so for the last year, Yseult has been the Gravity Drive Specialist aboard the Polaris. At first, she was very bitter, but she is growing to accept it, tinkering and theorizing with the drive when she’s able. But her hate and bitterness towards Schwartz still lingers.

Name: Rachel Eisley
Description: Gorgeous, shapely, graceful...Rachel doesn't look anything like what most people would associate with 'technical specialist' or even 'hacker.'  She delights in changing her hair styles and can almost never be found in a humdrum, drab shipboard uniform unless whoever she's serving under insists otherwise. Even then, she finds ways to make her appearance her own.

History: Eisley is an Earth girl who turned a childhood interest in computers and electronics into a career running systems security and telecommunications design at TwelveComm Systems, a company that initially specialized in the design, constructing and distributing of navigational 'buoys' throughout the solar system to help ships obtain precise location and movement data for themselves and other ships. Her skills were in high demand, and she arranged a transfer for her contract to Coriolis for what is rumored to be a hefty settlement to her former employer.

Personality:  Rachel is a mocha-skinned ray of sunlight wherever she goes, always graced with a smile. She bucks the stereotypes of technical personnel, with glowing social skills and a genuine love of being around people and having fun. While she can seem like someone who doesn't take their work very seriously, this isn't true. She just tries very hard not to show strain or stress, preferring not to make difficult situations harder for those around her.

Position and Duties: She serves as the navigator and systems operation specialist, especially the communications gear where her technical skill and pleasant demeanor make her well suited to talking with various port controls and other ships as needed. She often assists the pilot with collecting and analyzing sensor information as well, easing the workload. Rachel is also licensed to pilot the craft, though is not nearly as distinguished in this as the actual crew pilot...most often serving as co-pilot or simply monitoring the ship's progress between maneuver points.

Joseph Levi Greigg was born in a middle class American home. His parents were secular Jews, not very religious, but still practicing on the high holy days. With his father being an investment banker and his mother a veterinarian, Joseph wanted for little growing up. However, when he turned 18 and joined up with the United States Army, his parents were furious, and one step from disowning him. The only thing that prevented that last step was the fact that he went for and achieved the role of Combat Medic Specialist. For the first few years of his enlistment he was satisfied with his career path and didn’t give advancement much thought. He saw action in Indonesia and Africa, and witnessed first hand the horrors of war. Eventually he decided to leave the military and return to civilian life. His combat medic training enabled him to get a job as a FDNY paramedic. Although the pay wasn’t great, he saw himself making a difference. He also volunteered at the veterans administration as a volunteer counselor, helping returning soldiers cope and re-assimilate. It was at this time that Joe decided to go back to school on the G.I. Bill and become a MD. After fighting his way through college, he graduated with a double major in Clinical Psychology and International Relations. Although he continued his education in medicine, he never forgot his love of political and corporate negotiations. Once he graduated from medical school at the age of 34, he decided to open up a practice of his own in the New York City suburb of Bethpage specializing in mental trauma. Once the practice was going at a good clip, and with most of his commitment to the army reserve finished, Joseph decided something was missing from his life. He opened a consulting firm which specialized in inter-corporate negotiations. Eventually, this second business became his primary means of income, but he didn’t discount his medical practice. It is this part of his life that set him on the path to the stars. Joseph was a leading expert in his field and was called upon in 2090 to negotiate a tense situation on Ceres, between a mining company and one of the labor unions. This was Josephs first time off planet but not his last. Over the next two years he was instrumental in settling disputes off world seven time, in each case to the complete satisfaction of all parties involved.

Due to his postion in his chosen field of psychology, Joseph was a member in good standing with the ISC and after the return of the Polaris and the subsequent events that return set in motion, he was approached by the leadership of the council personally.

Joeseph lives his family life vicarously through his brother Robert and his wife Julie. They have 3 girls together. His father passed away before the return of the first Polaris Mission. His mother is still alive, but lives in a retirement community in florida.
